Nusach Ashkenaz, the brief comment.
Since the ArtScroll Series came into existence, rabbis and laymen, teachers and students, men and women, scholars and strivers for knowledge, have insisted that the times demand a complete yet functional Siddur, one that would present the prayers and their inspirational message in the vernacular, with clear and accurate laws and instructions. The ArtScroll Siddur in English was an attempt to answer that need. This new Russian edition will, we hope, do the same for our brothers and sisters who have made a heroic return to the faith of their grandparents.
We have tried to make this Siddur as practical and convenient as possible. The translation seeks to balance the lofty beauty of the heavily nuanced text with an easily understood idiom. Where a choice had to be made, we generally preferred fidelity to the text over inaccurate simplicity, but occasionally we had to stray a bit from the literal translation in order to capture the essence of a phrase in an accessible idiom. The commentary strives to explain difficult passages and to involve the reader in the emotional, spiritual and inspirational experience of prayer. Unattrib-uted comments are sometimes the author's own, but usually distill the general trend of several authorities. Clear instructions are provided throughout. More complex or lengthy halachos are discussed in the "Laws" sections at the end of the Siddur, which the reader will find to be a very helpful guide. Where relevant, we refer to the "Laws" section by paragraph number (§).
