Pervyye vrachi yevrei v Latvii poyavilis v XVIII veke, ikh chislo vozroslo v XIX veke. V osnovnom oni obuchalis' v Derptskom (Yur'yevskom) universitete, chast' - v drugikh rossiyskikh universitetakh, a takzhe v Zapadnoy Yevrope.

Posle osnovaniya Latviyskogo universiteta v 1919 g. i v yego sostave meditsinskogo fakul'teta, yevreyskiye yunoshi poluchili vozmozhnost' obresti meditsinskoye obrazovaniya na rodine (khotya s ogranicheniyem 5%, osobenno posle 1934 g.). Zubnykh vrachey gotovilo zubovrachebnoye otdeleniye meditsinskogo fakul'teta, farmatsevtov ־ farmatsevticheskoye otdeleniye khimicheskogo fakul'teta. V period s 1921 po 1941 gg. v Latviyskom universitete diplomy vracha poluchili 210 yevreyev. Iz nikh naiboleye izvestnymi stali: X. Giteya'son, D. Grayevskiy, I. Khaze, V. Landau, M. Mints, A. Shapiro, B. Dubinskiy, V. Ashnelevich, Ye. Grodzinskiy, 3. Gozioskiy, B. Landa, 3. Cherfas, L. Khnokh, A. Faytel'son, M. Dubinskiy, E. Khertsfel'd i dr.

Vrachi yevrei imeli dva professional'nykh obshchestva v Rige i v Liyepaye, uchastvovali v nauchnoy i obshchestvennoy zhizni Latviyskikh vrachey, publikovalis' v mestnykh i zagranichnykh izdaniyakh. No, prepodavateley -professorov yevreyev na meditsinskom fakul'tete Latviyskogo universiteta do 1940 g. ne bylo. Takova byla ustanovka togdashnego pravitel'stva Latvii.

V 1920 g. v Latvii rabotalo 105 vrachey yevreyev, v 1938 g. - 318 ili 20% ot kolichestva vrachey. Yevreyam prinadlezhalo okolo poloviny chastnykh bol'nits i okolo chetvertoy chasti aptek.

Sredi obshchestvennykh organizatsiy naiboleye izvestnoy byla 1’Bikur-Kholim ( Poseshcheniye bol'nykh”), kotoroy v 1940 g. prinadlezhala bol'nitsa v Rige na 100 mest, (dolgoletniy glavnyy vrach I. Ioffe), v Yelgave - na 40 mest, a takzhe sanatoriy v Priyedayne na 18 mest. Drugiye organizatsii byli ‘,Linas-Khatsedek (1’Blagotvoritel'nyy soyuz”) i OZE.

V Rizhskoy bol'nitse 1’Bikur-Kholim” rabotali professor V. Mints, do togo poluchivshiy uzhe vsemirnuyu izvestnost' v Moskve, a takzhe M. Mints, M. Dubinskiy, B. May, L. Khnokh. X. Shneyder, V. Krettser, 3. Cherfas, M. Ioffe i dr. V. Mints sovmestno s drugimi provel pervuyu operatsiyu na serdtse v Latvii v 1938 g....

The book collected and summarized data about Jews medics Latvia from 1918 to 1996. Total generalized about 5,000 biographies.

Author Eva Vater was born in 1922, is a party to the Second World War. After graduating from Riga Medical Institute in 1951, she worked as an obstetrician-gynecologist in the village. Malta, in Kuldiga, and later, until his retirement, in Riga. She is the author of several historical and journalistic essays on the history of medicine in Latvia.

The first doctors Jews in Latvia poyavilis in the XVIII century, their number has increased in the XIX century. They are mostly trained at Tartu (Yuryev) University, a part of - in other Russian universities, as well as in Western Europe.

After the founding of the University of Latvia in 1919, and it includes the Faculty of Medicine, Jewish boys were able to obtain medical education at home (although limited to 5%, especially after 1934). Dentists preparing dental department of the medical faculty, pharmacists - Pharmaceutical Department Faculty of Chemistry. In the period from 1921 to 1941. University of Latvia awards the doctor got 210 Jews. Of these the most famous was: X. Giteyason, D. Grajewo, J. Haase, B. Landau, M. Mintz, A. Shapiro, B. Dubinsky V. Ashnelevich, E. Grodzinskiy 3. Goziosky, B. Landa, 3. Cherfas, L. Hnoh A. Faitelson, M. Dubinsky, E. Herzfeld and others.

Doctors Jews had two professional societies in Riga and Liepaja participated in the scientific and public life of Latvian doctors, published in local and foreign publications. However, teachers' Professor at the Medical Faculty of the Jews, University of Latvia until 1940 was not. Such was the setting of the then government of Latvia.

In 1920 in Latvia there were 105 doctors of the Jews, in 1938 - 318, or 20% of the doctors. Jews owned about half of the private hospitals and about a quarter of pharmacies.

Among the best-known non-governmental organizations was 1'Bikur-Holim (visiting the sick "), which in 1940 belonged to the hospital in Riga, 100 people (many years chief physician J. Joffe) in Jelgava - 40 seats, as well as in the resort Priedaine 18 seats. Other organizations were 'Linas-Hatsedek (1'Blagotvoritelny Union ") and OZE.
