Who are the Jews - a people or group of people united by a common religion? What obgaai and faith of the Jewish people? What does it mean to be a Jew - born of a Jewish mother, or to keep the commandments?
On these and other issues is trying to give answers to the present book. The author does not claim to be a complete coverage of these complex issues, but has set a more modest goal: to give the reader who first applied to the subject, the most elementary knowledge of the history of the Jewish people and their faith and customs.
The questions that the author tried to answer, did not invent it, he asked them to people interested in Judaism and Jewish tradition. Therefore, the book is primarily addressed to those Russian Jews who decided to go back to the culture and customs of its people.
This book is the first in a series of "Encyclopedia of Jewish culture," and we hope that a more complete answers to these and other questions can be found in other books of the "Encyclopedia".
