The book is an attempt to study the synthesis of social and demographic development of the Jewish population of the former USSR during the past century, including population dynamics and dispersal in the republics and cities, ethno-linguistic composition, sex and age and family structure, fertility and mortality, educational attainment, occupational structure, part of the Soviet political system and emigration to other countries. In particular, the impact of the Holocaust as a total Jewish population and its socio-demographic structure. Much attention is paid to the representation of Jews among students, professionals and scientists of the former Soviet Union.
