The 90's decade mass immigration of the Bukharian Jewish community to Israel and the United States of America prompted this revolutionary new Bukharian-Russian-English-Hebrew etymological dictionary. This dictionary will provide on entry into this unique Jewish culture and the exact meaning of their language.

It is the result of painstaking scientific research that began in the mid- 1980's. Each of the some 10,000 words and expressions, popular idioms and special phrases is provided with it's pronunciation in the Latin transliteration. The dictionary also includes pictures and explanations, traditions and ceremonies, in order to try and acquaint the western user with the lifestyle of this community.
The dictionary is structured in the following way: in the first part of each letter, the original words in Bukharian appears, thereafter words of Persian origin, Arabic, Hebrew, Turkic and Russian; as well as words originating in other languages which penetrated the Bukharian language through Russian. The Bukharian alphabet and a key to the transliterations appear in a table in the forward of the Russian version.

I would especially like to thank professor Michael Zand, as a colleague, a well known scientist and Head of the Persian Department at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He has helped a lot with his expert advise and scientific consultation. Also to be commended are Benjamin Ben David, Hana Tolmas for their references, and my colleagues from the Israel Broadcasting Authority - Tony Fyne and Ricky Harel for their volunteering help in checking up the English and Hebrew entries respectively, and Vladimir Ekhievich for his skilled computer typesetting. Without the support, help, patience and understanding of my wife Tamara and my eldest son Alexander, this dictionary would not have come to fruition.

I would like to thank the "Union of Bukharian Jews in Israel" and the Jewish Agency for their sponsorship in publication of this dictionary.

Whilst every effort for accuracy was made before this publication went into print, I call you, the user, to assist me in improving the dictionary. The address for comments is: Union of Bukharian Jews in Israel, 2 Ha Congress sir.,

Tel-Aviv, Israel.
