Look inside the book

Volume I of the Maskilon presents the user with much more than the raditional dictionary. When one looks up the root of the desired word, one sees lot only the word itself, but every word derived from that root with its English ind Russian translation. This provides immediate, associational learning of the nain patterns of Hebrew word formation. By seeing every verb derived from he root, one develops a profound understanding of the verb system of the anguage. By following the reference to each pertinent verb table, one is presented with exact paradigms of different verb conjugations.

In the Maskilon we have chosen 1640 verb roots - those common components of related words which are extracted from verbs and then extended ;o different other parts of speech. Yet not all existing roots of the Hebrew anguage are included in the Maskilon; we excluded those which we determined :o be of pure etymological interest, which is to say that they are not used in the Dresent stage of Hebrew development.

The notion of a root is understood by us as a verb-root. Each entry in the Vlaskilon begins with a verb-root. The verb-roots follow one another in alphabetical order, reading from the right of the book to the left.
