The book is devoted to the fate of synagogue buildings in the CIS over the past century. The first part covers the period from the early twentieth century to the collapse of the USSR; second - the story of how, in the post-Soviet state confiscated part of synagogues and Jewish communities back gets a second life. The author introduces the reader to the problems associated with this process, and stops on the role of the JDC in restitution and repair synagogues. The book is richly illustrated with photographs, mostly from the collection of the JDC; most of them published. Attached is a list of active synagogues today the CIS. One of the previous books Beizer - "The Jews of Leningrad, 1917 - 1939: National Life and Sovietization" (1999) - won Antsiferov Award 2000 for best foreign book on St. Petersburg.
