David Bergelson (1884-1952), one of the founders of Soviet Yiddish literature, has created its distinctive impressionistic style of narration.
The novel "Retreat" - about the fates of two friends who have been trained in the big city and participating in the revolutionary movement.
One of them comes after the reference to a small town Rakitnoe and opens a pharmacy there, and then suddenly dies. His friend tries to investigate his death.
The novel was begun by the writer in 1913, between the two revolutions, when there was a lull, but the unrest continued to drain.
