From the preface to the Rambam "Mishneh Torah"

I plucked determination, Moses, son of Maimon of Spain, relying on the help of the Lord, blessed be He, has studied all these books and found it necessary to draw up a code of laws arising from all these works - which is forbidden and what is permitted, which are defiled, and that from a purely contamination, and also all other laws of the Torah. I lay out is clear and concise language to streamline the Oral Torah and make it accessible to all, eliminate ambiguity, fragmentary and subject to varying interpretations. These things are clear and close, and the faithful, in accordance with the law, which was brought to us all these writings and comments from the time of Rabbeinu a-Kadosh to this day. The aim of this work - to make the possession of all the laws of the Torah, and small and great, both the commandments and regulations sages and prophets. In other words - that the person does not need any other essay for the understanding of Jewish law, as this essay includes the entire Oral Torah, with all the regulations, customs and taboos that have been introduced since the sages of Moshe Rabbeinu to the compilation of the Talmud, in According to the explanation of "Gaon", known from their works. Therefore nazvalya this work "Mishneh Torah" ("Follow the Torah"), as the first person reads the Written Torah, and then - this book, and from it learns the Oral Torah, and he has no need to read between some other book.
