Repentant

The hero of the novel survived the Holocaust and was able to achieve prosperity. But he begins to have an aversion to the temptations and lies surrounding the life, his soul becomes a battleground of Gd and the devil. What is the meaning of the observance of religious prescriptions? Just a Gd who committed unspeakable suffering of his people? Is it disgusting simple human desires and weaknesses? In the end, he finds the answer to these questions, but I agree there with his stern, uncompromising decision of the author?

Joseph Shapiro, who says in the novel the author about his life, was born into a religious family, had fled from Poland - from Hitler, the Soviet Union - from Stalin. His lover, Marxist, has promised to hang Joseph after the victory of world revolution. However, this did not prevent them to get married, go to America and there to get rich. And it would be nice - if Joseph Shapiro saw at least some sense in this life. He sees one way out: become a religious Jew, but did not see any sense in this. He believes in God, but does not believe that He gave the Torah. And most importantly: Joseph did not understand how you can believe in God after he admitted the existence of such suffering in the world.
