Jewish history of printing in Lithuania In 1 st century can be divided into three periods. The first of these began in the late eighteenth century, when the first book in the Hebrew language, and lasted until the end of 1836, when the activities of Jewish printing was sharply limited. Since the beginning of 1837 in Lithuania (and until 1845 in the Russian Empire) operated only one Jewish printing. This period ended in 1862 when the ban was lifted on the activity of printing and began a rapid blossoming Jewish printing. Before the 1st World War more than 75 percent of printers in Lithuania belonged to Jews.
This publication describes the first two periods of the Jewish printing. Used for the preparation of publications, mainly materials of the Central State Archive of Lithuania (TSGALI) and some foreign editions.
