At present it is the unique collection of archive documents on state of subethnic Jewish communities — those of Middle Asian and of European Jews in the area of Middle Asia (and since 1921 in Uzbekistan) being a part of the Russian Empire and of the USSR, with the mode of life characteristic for each one of the two communities. Documents included into the book and coming from different institutions: the Office of the Governor General of Turkestan, senatorial revision of the region, military governors of districts, heads of cantons, ministers of military affairs, of finance, Department of secret police at Turkestan Region, petitions of Bukharian Jewish rabbis etc., as well as documents of the Soviet period: those of Narkomnats (People's Commissariate of Nations' Affairs), Sovnatsmen (Council for Affairs of Minorities), OZET (Society for Agrarian Arranging of Working Jews), and Comzet (Committee for Agrarian Arranging of Working Jews), conferences etc., — reveal policy of the Russian Empire and of Soviet authority in Jewish question, state of Jews in the Muslim region. It concerns religion, part icipation in economic life of the region, education, Zionist movement in the region, involving of Jews into workmen's associations. The documents enlighten contrariety of policy of Soviet authorities towards Jews, attacks on their religious life and national culture.
