Based on the wide range of sources, the author shows an unusual historical destiny of the Jewish people, primarily Jewish population residing in the territory of the former Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. Despite all sorts of trouble, the breaking of the Jews over many centuries - of persecution, exile, genocide - they always survive.
The book, which presents the first part of the trilogy contains extraordinary thought. Expressed, in particular, the idea that in the XX century in Russia there is a new subethnos - "Russian Jews" - the formation of which does not fit into the framework of simple assimilation.
We consider the emergence and role of the Zionist movement, three types of Zionism - the religious, settler and politician, his attitude towards the bourgeois and socialist movements. Noteworthy are the observations on the causes of anti-Semitism and circumstances of its disappearance.
