Commentary on Mishnah Avoth ch. 4-6

The most famous and most important treatise (the Mishnah) is a treatise Avot, which collects all the words of instruction. It is small in volume, but so significant that the chapter Amann (Bava Kama 30a) states: "Rabbi Yehuda said:" Whoever wishes to become a saint, let fulfills the requirements of section on damages. " Rava said: "The requirements Tractate Avot" - some of them say (on behalf of): "Requirements treatise Berachot". Thus, according to Rabbi Yeu-dy, righteousness is associated with the performance of the property laws, and in the opinion of Rava - or the laws of the treatise Avot, or the laws of blessings (Berachot). This means that the perfection of man is determined by three different, not similar to each other areas. (First), a person must be perfect in its dealings with other people. (Second), it must be perfect in itself, that is, become a perfect creation. (And, third), it must be perfect in a relationship with the Creator, that is, in his duties to him. These three excellence include everything, this will be detailed in the first chapter of the tractate Avot, here to dwell on this is not the place. So, Rabbi Yehuda says that "whoever wishes to become a saint, let fulfills the requirements of section on damages" - in other words, suppose that (learn to) do not cause anyone harm. In this - the essence of righteousness: (behave), not to cause loss to anyone. After all, how to call the righteous man from whom others suffer a loss? Therefore, the righteous must study the laws of damages. In this case, Rabbi Yehuda did not say that he should do good deeds or giving alms, because there is no doubt that everyone is obliged to make another good, and no special righteousness in it. But if a person refrains from harming others - even if he does nothing, just be careful that no one of his action does not harm another and did not cause him any harm through negligence - such a man is a complete saint.
