Proceedings of Sefer Center Scholarly Conferences in Jewish Studies

These three volumes comprise the proceedings of the two Annual International Conferences on Jewish Studies organized by the Moscow Center for University Teaching of Jewish Civilization "Sefer" in 2007 - the «winter» 14th Conference (Moscow, January, 30 - February, 1) and the «summer» 12th Youth Conference (July 9-11).

The first of these conferences, which is the largest and the most significant event in Jewish academic life in the CIS countries and the Baltic States, was organized by "Sefer" cooperation with the:

•   International Center for University Teaching of Jewish Civilization,
•   Chais Center for Jewish Studies in Russian (the Hebrew University of Jerusalem),
•   American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (Joint),
•   Jewish Agency (Sohnut),
•   Euro-Asian Jewish Congress,
•    Russian Jewish Congress,

•   Center for Studies of the Culture and History of East European Jews, Vilnius, Lithuania.
The second conference, which is traditionally aimed at the younger generation of researchers, was organized with the support of the

•    AVI CHAI Foundation,
•    Chais Family Foundation,
•    American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee,

as well as sponsors who have wished to remain anonymous.

Our partnership with some of these organizations was extended to the preparation of the proceedings of both conferences, which resulted in the publication of the three collections of articles, composed according to their subjects. Two first volumes include articles on Jewish history and ethnology, the third one - articles devoted to Jewish thought, literature, art, and an intercultural dialogue.

We are deeply grateful to all our partners for supporting academic Jewish Studies in the former Soviet Union and hope that the present proceedings will be a convincing demonstration of the success of our shared efforts.

For the first time in the many years since "Sefer" was founded and our first annual conference was held, we decided to unite in the proceedings publication the contributions of researchers representing different generations and national schools in order to demonstrate the similarities and differences in their research.

As the new generation of Jewish Studies' researchers in the former Soviet Union continues to grow and expand, we found it possible and advantageous to follow a unified subject-based approach without isolating the articles by the younger researchers in a separate volume. The fact that the editorial board is made up by people of different generations also reflects this new tendency.

We hope that the present proceedings of our two 2007 conferences will give the reader an overview of the main trends, subject matter and level of contemporary research in Jewish history.
