In his study on the history of the Khazars Arthur Koestler quotes or paraphrases many medieval sources in Arabic, Jewish, Latin, Greek and Old Russian. He has translated these reports into English or German. In preparing Russian edition of the book Koestler, we felt it necessary to quote from medieval sources give for Academic Russian translations. This method allows you to preserve an atmosphere of intense scientific research and to convey the spirit of ancient texts, but at the same time to avoid confusion in such a small area such as the transmission of medieval religious disputes between Christians, Jews and Muslims, rich sharp recriminations. To the extent possible, the notes we give a complete translation, which describes certain significant situations (eg, choice of faith "Kievan Prince Vladimir). For the same reason in Annex III "Khazar Correspondence" we give a complete translation of the longer version's reply to the Khazar King Joseph (PK Kokovtsov published in 1932), whereas Koestler limited historical review and bibliographic remarks.
